Getting Around Stockholm: Public Transportation

Stockholm’s public transport system, operated by SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik), is one of the most efficient in Europe. It integrates the metro (Tunnelbana), commuter trains, buses, and ferries, all accessible with one ticket or travel card.

The Stockholm Metro, known as the world’s longest art gallery, features over 100 stations, each decorated with unique sculptures, mosaics, and paintings.

  • Hours: Daily from 5:00 a.m. to around 1:00 a.m. (with night services on weekends).

  • Tickets: A single journey costs around 42 SEK, valid for 75 minutes across all transport types. The SL Access Card or SL app can be used for contactless payment.

The bus network reaches areas not covered by the metro, operating frequently throughout the day and night. Real-time information displays are available at most stops.

Several ferry lines, included in the SL ticket system, connect the islands of the archipelago and provide a scenic way to travel — especially between Skeppsholmen, Djurgården, and Södermalm.

Stockholm is very bike-friendly, with dedicated lanes and beautiful waterfront routes. City bikes and electric scooters (Bolt, Voi, Tier) can be rented through mobile apps. Helmets are recommended for safety

Taxis are widely available, though prices vary — always confirm the fare before starting your trip. Major rideshare apps such as Uber and Bolt operate across the city.

Stockholm’s compact and scenic layout makes walking one of the best ways to explore. Stroll through the cobbled streets of Gamla Stan (Old Town), admire the architecture of Östermalm, or enjoy the trendy cafés and boutiques of Södermalm.
